About This Quote

The lines of this quote are some of the most famous poetry ever written. A good portion of the world’s population knows the words to this poem, but few know the meaning behind them. The title of the book is The Road Not Taken, and its author is Robert Frost. The story involves two main characters named Robert Frost and William Wordsworth.

Robert Frost, still known today as one of America’s greatest poets, was a man struggling with life. He had no money, no job, no future, nor did he have any family or friends. He was alone in his life and he also suffered from depression.

On top of all that, he had an abusive relationship with his wife. A woman who was not even close to being faithful to him. William Wordsworth was a close friend of Robert Frost’s who suffered from similar problems to Frost’s.

William Wordsworth too had no job or money and was about to give up on his dream of becoming a writer. The line “The wingèd chariot hurrying near” refers to time as it can often come for us faster than we expect it to come. The time has come for us to move on, but we are afraid that our life will end before we can do so. This is why many people believe that time is running out for them now and that they will not make it past their thirties; they are trying to make it past their seventies instead.

They forget that time never stops moving forward; it always moves forward toward us like a wingèd chariot hurls its way toward you with haste and speed.
